Two top chambers (atria) and two lower chambers make up the heart (ventricles). A natural pacemaker (the sinus node) in the right upper chamber controls the heart's rhythm in most cases (atrium). Each heartbeat is generally initiated by electrical signals sent by the sinus node. These electrical signals go through the atria, causing the heart muscles to contract (squeeze) and pump blood into the ventricles. The signals then slow down when they reach the AV node, which is a cluster of cells. The ventricles can now fill with blood due to the slight delay.
