This handheld DNA analyzer uses disposable on-chip cartridges, silicon biosensors, and micro fluids to detect genetic mutations in target DNA sequences. PCR technology is used in the device to make multiple copies of DNA. An ion-sensitive transistor is then used to measure the number of DNA copies made. Device allows rapid and early diagnosis of various diseases conditions such as cancer, malaria, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Ebola, gonorrhea, and tuberculosis (TB) in a very short period of time. Small genomes, such as those of bacteria and viruses, are also sequenced with the device. Thousands of nanopores in the USB powered DNA reader form unique electronic signatures, which are detected using the analyzer, providing a readout of the DNA sequence. Nanopores are narrow protein channels that allow DNA strands to pass through them. By using nanopore technology, the need to perform overlap analysis is virtually eliminated, allowing for the rapid sequencing of DNA with very short DNA strands. As well as health-related applications, the device also helps protect endangered animal species from diseases and against the risk of illegal trafficking.
