Anesthetic gas masks, or anesthesia masks, are designed to administer anesthetic gases to a patient during spontaneous or manual ventilation. An anesthetic mask fits over the mouth and nose to create an air-tight seal and is used to oxygenate patients pre-operatively or administer a general anesthetic (GA). The mask is attached to a breathing system at the start of the GA to administer oxygen, subsequently with nitrous oxide if used, and then the anesthetic volatile such as Sevoflurane. The mask is removed once the patient is asleep, and the breathing system is connected to an airway device like an i-gel® supraglottic airway. The face mask is again used at the end of the anesthetic to administer oxygen to aid recovery from anesthesia.

They are primarily administered through inhalation by a face mask, a tracheal tube, or a laryngeal mask airway. Each additional 0.1 above or below a MAC of 1.0 equates to a one standard deviation increase or decrease in dose. 50% of patients will not move at 1.0 MAC, 68% at 1.1 MAC, 95% at 1.2 MAC, and 99.7% at 1.3 MAC.
