An airway catheter, also known as an endotracheal tube, is a device used to maintain an open airway in a patient who cannot breathe adequately on their own. Endotracheal tubes are elastic tubes made from different materials, such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), silicone, or rubber. They are inserted through the mouth or nose and passed down the throat into the trachea (windpipe). An endotracheal tube is often used during surgery procedures and in emergencies. Positioning the tube within the trachea is called endotracheal intubation. These endotracheal tubes have one or two channels called lumens. A double-lumen endotracheal tube is used when it is necessary to ventilate each lung separately, such as with specific lung or chest surgeries.
Airway Catheters encompass various types, including nasopharyngeal airway catheters, oropharyngeal airway catheters, and others. Oropharyngeal airway catheters, also known as Guedel airways, are solid intraoral devices that conform to the tongue and displace it from the posterior pharyngeal wall, restoring pharyngeal airway patency. An oropharyngeal airway is a curved plastic tube with a flange at one end designed to be positioned between the tongue and the hard palate to relieve soft palate obstruction. An oropharyngeal airway has four parts: the flange, the body, the tip, and a channel to allow for the passage of air and suction. Oropharyngeal airways come in various sizes (e.g., 40 mm to 110 mm). Choosing an appropriate oropharyngeal size is determined on an individual basis through the use of anatomical landmarks. When determining the proper oropharyngeal size for a patient, one must assess where the oropharyngeal airway parts lie with the patient’s anatomical landmarks. The flange should be approximated externally to where it is abutting the lips, and the tip should be able to reach the angle of the mandible. Insertion of an oropharyngeal airway is not complicated but must be done with care to avoid further worsening of the airway obstruction and injuries to the airway.
